County Recognizes Loretto Mustangs Baseball for Winning State Championship


The County Commission officially recognized the 2017 Loretto Mustangs Baseball Team for winning the State Championship at their September Regular Session meeting.

Below is the text of the resolution the commission passed honoring the team and their achievements: 

WHEREAS, for many years under the leadership of Coach Gary Lamm, the Loretto Mustang Baseball team
has been a model of consistency and success in the world of high school baseball. After making it to the Semi Finals
of the State Tournament in 2016, the Mustangs entered the 2017 season with high expectations and they did not
disappoint, going 30-3 during the regular season, marking one of the best seasons in school history.

WHEREAS, on May 10 th the Loretto Mustangs played the Summertown Eagles in the District 12A
Championship Game where they won 7-3. One-week later on May 17 th , the Mustangs again played the Summertown
Eagles, this time for the TSSAA Region 6A Championship. In that game the Mustangs prevailed 7-5, securing back-
to-back region championships for the team.

WHEREAS, after the conclusion of the regional tournament, the Mustangs played Eagleville in the TSSAA
Sectional where they earned a decisive 10-0 victory, propelling them into the Class A State Tournament for the
second consecutive year.

WHEREAS, the Mustangs opened the State Tournament in Murfreesboro by shutting out Greenback, the
Region 2A Champions, 4-0. Their next game came against Huntingdon where they won 8-2. In the Class A Semi
Finals, the Mustangs beat Gordonsville 11-2, advancing to the Class A State Championship Game.

WHEREAS, on May 26 th , the Loretto Mustangs played Goodpasture Christian in the Class A Championship
Game. The Mustangs dominated the entire game and won 4-0, securing the team’s first ever State Championship.

WHEREAS, the Loretto Mustangs Baseball team had many achievements during the 2017 season including
earning the titles of District Champions, Region Champions and State Champions. The Mustangs finished the year 35-
3, winning 29 consecutive games. Their success on the diamond as well as the way the players and coaches conducted
themselves all season made the Loretto community as well as all of Lawrence County proud.

NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Lawrence County Legislative Body meeting in regular session
this 26 th day of September 2017, recognizes and congratulates the 2017 Loretto Mustangs Baseball players and
coach for their historic season which concluded with winning the 2017 Class A State Championship.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that upon passage a copy of this resolution shall be transmitted by the

County Clerk to the Loretto High School Baseball team

This Resolution shall take effect upon adoption, the public welfare requiring it.
