The Library Green is a community improvement project sponsored by the Leadership Lawrence County Class of 2021-22, and developed by a true coalition of local businesses and government.
Thanks to everyone who helped transform this overgrown lot on Gallaher Street into a place where people can enjoy quiet time with a book, bring their children, and have picnics.
Participants in this year’s Summer Reading program will be the first group to enjoy the Library Green. The first session is this Thursday, but you can still register your K-3rd grade children for the six-week program that offers stories, crafts, games, and a July 9 visit from the Science Guys. Kids from kindergarten to sixth grade can request a summer reading log and earn prizes by reading books.
A new Teen Book & Writing Club for ages 14-18 meets for the first time June 13 to vote for books to read and discuss at upcoming meetings. Monthly gatherings will also include creative writing prompts, book-themed games, and of course, snacks.
Luckily, there are Library programs for adults to enjoy. Library Director Teresa Newton leads discussion at the monthly Last Thursday Book Club. Adults who enjoy the relaxation of coloring gather on Wednesdays at 1:30 for Coloring with Friends. A Genealogy Club meets every Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m.
The newest library feature is one that every age can enjoy. With funds from the Gladish Family Charitable Trust, our library has subscribed to Hoopla, a streaming service that offers videos, music, audiobooks, comics, and eBooks for checkout. Library patrons can register for an account with their library card number and borrow up to ten items a month on their computer or phone. The Hoopla app is available for androids and iPhones, desktop computer users can go to hoopladigital.com to register.
Library patrons are also benefitting from a generous donation from the estate of Roberta Cathey of Summertown. Ms. Cathey willed our Library $50,000 for books, and stipulated that 50% of them be large print editions.
The Lawrence County Public Library offers something for everyone of every age. For more information and to learn about upcoming programs, follow the Library on Facebook and check out its website, lawcolibrary.org.
